Kadamba promotes multi-cropping horticulture systems by introducing high-value crops such as cocoa, agar wood, lac, floriculture and spices alongside traditional crops — optimising land use, increasing income per acre and enhancing sustainability.
Background
Blessed with the coastline of the Arabian Sea and the lush mountains of the Sahyadri (Western Ghats), Uttara Kannada’s lifeblood is agriculture. Kadamba has given farmers a new sense of direction by introducing modern cash crops to supplement existing ones.
Although areca nut, coconut, banana, mango, pepper, cocoa and cashew have been grown here for generations, more lucrative crops like agar wood, lac (aragu) resin, floriculture, cocoa and rubber have proved nothing less than a blessing.
Activities
- Promoting horticulture crops as mixed crops between areca nut, coconut and mango plantations
- A recent initiative for small chilli cultivation in Uttara Kannada district
